Why use a split pdf tool?
Splitting a PDF lets you extract just the pages you need — a single chapter, a specific report section, or a few key slides — without sending around a 300-page master document. Common reasons: emailing only the relevant signatures from a contract, separating receipts from a bulk download, or breaking a textbook into manageable study units.
Common use cases
Extract a chapter
Pull out chapter 3 from a 500-page textbook for focused study.
Send only signed pages
Email pages 12-14 of a contract instead of the whole 60-page agreement.
Separate receipts
Break a year of bank statements into per-month files.
Trim presentation
Take just slides 5-15 from a 50-slide deck for a quick share.
How to split a PDF
- Drop your PDF. Drag-and-drop or click to upload. Files never leave your device.
- Choose mode. Pick "One PDF per page" to fully split, or "Custom ranges" to extract specific spans like 1-3, 5, 7-9.
- Click Split PDF. Processing happens locally in your browser using PDF-lib.
- Download the ZIP. All output PDFs come bundled in a single ZIP for one-click save.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a page-count limit?
No. ShrinkTo handles PDFs of any length. Very large files (1000+ pages) take longer because everything runs in your browser, but there's no hard cap.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Splitting happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never touch a server.
What does the format "1-3, 5, 7-9" do?
It outputs three PDFs: pages 1-3 in one file, page 5 alone in another, and pages 7-9 in a third. Each range becomes one separate output PDF.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
First unlock it using our /tools/unlock-pdf tool, then split. Splitting an encrypted file directly will fail.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Splitting copies the original pages byte-for-byte into the new files. There's no re-rendering or compression.
