50 KB is the magic number for most form portals
If you've ever tried uploading a photo to a job portal, exam application, or government form, you've probably seen the dreaded error: "File size must be less than 50 KB." It's one of the most common upload limits in India and globally — and for good reason. 50 KB photos load instantly on any connection, even 2G, and store cheaply at scale.
The problem is most modern phone cameras produce photos that are 2-4 MB — that's 40 to 80 times over the limit. Manually fiddling with quality sliders to hit exactly 50 KB takes forever and usually overshoots in either direction.
ShrinkTo solves this in one step: pick "50 KB", drop your photo, get the file. Our binary-search algorithm tries multiple compression levels in parallel and converges on the highest-quality version that still fits under 50 KB — usually within a fraction of a second.

Common questions about 50 KB compression
For a typical headshot, 50 KB is plenty for high-quality display at sizes up to about 600×800 pixels. The compressed image will look crisp on phones and web profiles. Only when zoomed in dramatically would any compression artifacts become visible.
Many passport portals require even smaller files (10-20 KB). Use our custom field to hit exact targets like 20 KB. For standard 50 KB requirements, the preset is exactly right.
Sometimes the issue is dimensions, not file size. Many portals require specific pixel sizes (e.g., 200×230). ShrinkTo focuses on file size — if you need specific dimensions too, you may need to crop first.
Currently the tool processes one image at a time, but you can compress as many as you like back-to-back with no limit. Each image takes about a second.
