NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and is the single largest medical entrance exam in India, with around 24 lakh candidates appearing every year. The application requirements are stricter than most exams because NTA uses AI-based facial matching to verify candidates at multiple points — registration, admit card collection, exam center entry, and final result publication.
The most confusing part for first-time NEET applicants: you need two different photo sizes, not one. The passport-size goes in the online application form. The 4×6 inch postcard-size goes physically to the exam center on the day of the exam. Lose either one and you're in trouble.

Why NEET requires two different photos
Most exams ask for one photo. NEET asks for two because the NTA uses physical and digital verification at different stages:
- Online application stage — your passport photo (3.5×4.5 cm) goes into the digital application form. NTA's AI system matches this against your live photo at the exam center.
- Exam center stage — when you arrive at the exam hall, you submit a 4×6 inch postcard-size photo to the invigilator. They keep it for physical verification and result-day cross-checking.
- Result & counselling stage — your photo is matched again during counselling for college admission. If the application photo and postcard photo show the same person, you proceed; if they differ noticeably, you can be flagged for further verification.
Both photos must be of the same person taken in the same general session — same hairstyle, similar clothing colour, same general appearance. Don't use one photo from a year ago and a fresh selfie from yesterday.
Passport photo specifications (for online form)
- Physical size: 3.5 cm width × 4.5 cm height (Indian passport standard)
- File size: 10 KB to 200 KB
- File format: JPG / JPEG only
- Color: Color photograph (black-and-white not accepted)
- Background: Plain white
- Face coverage: Approximately 80% of the photo area
- Pose: Direct frontal view, both ears visible, neutral expression
- Date stamp: Date of photo capture must be printed on the photo (e.g., "Photo taken on 02/05/2026")
- Recency: Photo must be taken within 6 months of application
- Glasses: Permitted without glare; sunglasses banned
- Headwear: Religious head coverings permitted only if face is fully visible; no caps/hats
Postcard photo specifications (for exam center)
- Physical size: 4 inches × 6 inches (approximately 10 cm × 15 cm)
- File size: 50 KB to 300 KB (for online upload as backup)
- File format: JPG / JPEG only
- Print: Must be physically printed on photographic paper or quality matte paper
- Same identity rules: All other rules from passport size apply (background, face coverage, no sunglasses, etc.)
- Date stamp: Date of capture must be visible on the printed photograph
- Quantity: Print at least 2 copies — one to submit, one backup
The postcard photo is the only NEET document where you must present a physical print. Everything else is digital. Print it well in advance and store it flat in a clear plastic sleeve to prevent damage.

How to prepare your NEET files
- Take both photos in the same session Same outfit, same hairstyle, same lighting. Use a true white wall and natural daylight. Take the passport-style photo first, then back up a step and take the postcard-size shot. This ensures both photos clearly show the same person.
- Add the date overlay Most photo studios add this automatically. If you're DIY, use a photo editor's text tool to add "Photo taken on DD/MM/YYYY" in the lower portion of the photo. Black text, readable font.
- Crop and resize the passport photo Open /compress-to-200kb. Upload the photo. Use the crop tool to set 3.5:4.5 aspect ratio. Set target size to 90 KB (well within 10–200 KB).
- Crop and resize the postcard photo Same tool. Upload the wider shot. Crop to 4:6 aspect ratio. Set target size to 200 KB (within 50–300 KB).
- Prep signature and thumb impression Sign on white paper in dark pen, photograph it under good light. Do the same for the left thumb impression with a stamp pad. Use ShrinkTo to compress signature to 25 KB and thumb to 80 KB.
- Print 2+ copies of the postcard photo The 4×6 inch postcard photo must be physically carried to the exam center. Print on photographic paper at any photo studio (₹10–30 per print). Bring at least 2 copies in a flat plastic sleeve.

5 mistakes that get NEET applications rejected
- Forgetting the postcard photo The single most common NEET issue. Candidates remember to upload digital documents but show up at the exam center without a printed postcard photo, and get denied entry. Print early.
- Different photos for passport and postcard Some candidates use a year-old passport photo and a recent postcard. NTA's facial matching can flag this as suspicious. Both photos must look like the same person from the same general timeframe.
- No date stamp on photo The notification specifies the date must be visible on the photograph. NTA verifies this manually for a sample of applications. Photos without a date can be rejected during scrutiny.
- Hair covering ears NTA's AI specifically uses ear position for facial matching. If your hair hides your ears in the photo, the system can fail to match you at the exam center. Tie hair back or tuck it behind ears.
- Off-white background Cream or light grey backgrounds caused by indoor lighting will fail the automated check. Take photos in natural daylight against a true white wall, or use a photo tool's background-replacement.
What to physically bring to the NEET exam center
On exam day, NTA expects you to carry:
- Printed admit card (downloaded from NTA portal)
- 2 copies of the 4×6 inch postcard-size photograph
- Original valid photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, passport, or driving license)
- 1 photocopy of the photo ID
- Transparent water bottle (no labels)
- Black/blue ballpoint pen (NTA usually provides these but bring a backup)
Pack everything the night before in a clear plastic folder. The postcard photos should be flat — no folds, no rolling.
Why we recommend browser-based tools for NEET
NEET applications include face photos linked to your name, Aadhaar, PAN, and academic records. This is highly personal data — exactly the kind that should never be uploaded to unknown image-resizer websites. Even reputable services have suffered breaches; "files deleted in 2 hours" is unverifiable.
Browser-based tools like ShrinkTo run entirely on your phone or laptop. The images get compressed by your device's CPU and never travel over the internet. There's no server upload, no temporary storage, and no possibility of your face data being seen by anyone else. You can verify this — open your browser's Developer Tools, watch the Network tab while using the tool, and you'll see no outbound file requests.
Final NEET document checklist
Before submitting your application, verify each:
- ✓ Passport photo: 3.5×4.5 cm, 10–200 KB, JPG, white background, date visible
- ✓ Postcard photo (digital backup): 4×6 inch ratio, 50–300 KB, JPG, same person same session
- ✓ Signature: running cursive (not capitals), 4–30 KB, JPG
- ✓ Left thumb impression: 10–200 KB, JPG
- ✓ All photos show 80% face coverage
- ✓ Both ears visible in both photos
- ✓ Background is true white (not cream)
- ✓ At least 2 printed copies of postcard photo ready for exam day
