Built for people who hate "file too large" errors
The problem we wanted to solve
Anyone who has ever uploaded a photo to a job portal, government form, or exam application knows the loop: take photo, upload, "file too large," try a quality slider, upload again, "still too large," lower quality more, upload, "image quality too low," try again. Half an hour gone.
The existing image compression tools are great at making files smaller — but they don't let you specify how much smaller. TinyPNG decides for you. Squoosh hands you a slider and says "good luck." None of them let you say "I need this to be exactly under 50 KB."
What ShrinkTo does differently
We start from the target size — yours, not ours — and work backwards. Tell us "100 KB" and we use a binary-search algorithm to converge on the highest-quality compression that still fits. Most images are processed in under a second. The result is the smallest possible visual quality loss for your specific size constraint.
Why everything happens in your browser
We could have built a server-based tool. It would have been easier in some ways. But we chose to do all compression in the browser because:
- Your photos are private. ID photos, passport photos, family pictures — these aren't files you should be sending to an unknown server. With our approach, they don't leave your device.
- It's faster. No upload time, no server processing queue, no download time. Just compression speed itself.
- It's free forever. Without server costs, we have no incentive to push you to a paid tier or limit free use.
- It works offline. Once the page loads, you can disconnect and it still works.

Job seekers fitting their photo under portal limits. Students applying for UPSC, SSC, NEET, JEE. Travelers preparing visa applications. Bloggers optimizing for page speed. WordPress users who don't want yet another plugin. Anyone who has ever stared at a "max 50 KB" upload error.
